Walked, talked, ate fun foods. All of these holiday experiences… And what snagged my imagination? Some old stones that some poor buggers were made to stand up.

Machrie Moor standing stones.

Together with the news that the red altar stone at Stonehenge came from Scotland, and the white stones on Arran were placed next to the sandstone erections, I heard the dad/chief/clan elder speak. Go, my child, and bring back a red stone. This task might have been a quest, a leadership task, involving as it would not only the finding of the stone but also the organization of the many people involved in its transport.

Inspired by old stuff. Not for nothing that I’ve spent two years researching and writing a novel set in the first decade of the 20th century. Inspired by a newspaper report of a court case involving a woman charged under the criminal code against witchcraft and fortune-telling.
